The Name Tanner Foust will ring a bell with most gear heads, videos of his Stunts will ring a lot more bells even and then there is Top Gear USA! ‘nough said!
I can’t really remember the first time I heard the Name Tanner Foust or seen him race or do a crazy stunt but certainly was some time before I started following Ken Blocks craziness, who I for the first time really was aware of, a little before Gymkhana 1, so go figure.
So when after the last Ford Event I was asked if I wanted join an internal Event at Ford Germany HQ with Tanner for a little presentation and Q&A, I was very excited.
Here in Germany it’s not that easy to follow the GRC or any of the up and coming Motorsport events and leagues, neither is it, or rather was it, easy to follow Top Gear UK or US. The Internet has its ways and so do fans. More and more sites and blogs about Formula Drift and GRC and all the other good stuff popped up and one name that kept coming up was and is Tanner Foust. I am glad more people get to see these fantastic new sports like Rallycross, as even german TV stations now broadcast the X-Games for example.
Tanner Foust was here for the X-Games in Munich and stopped by for the Event at Ford, and having a little time on his hand the day before he went and hit the RING again. This time driving the small but fierce Ford Fiesta ST and being accompanied but the absolutely bonkers Focus RS500. That would have been absolutely fantastic to witness. Maybe next time.
At Ford HQ we got a nice tour through the factory and got to see most stages of the new Fiesta build, this time on foot and not in that little “train” from last time, which was so much more fun and got to the Q&A part at some point.
I have met my fair share of celebrities ,especially on Events, and shot a lot of events where lots of public figures were in the spotlight, surrounded by photographers, reporters and fans and seldom have I seen one as professional as Tanner. Sure, we had no press there officially, but the Ford photographer, me and then all the employes with there phones and so on clicked away like one normally does and very calmly, friendly and always aware of what was around him so he wouldn’t forget anyone or forget to look in your camera directly. What a fantastic guy, very calm and nice and not bothered by all of it! And maybe it should be like this, but certainly isn’t like this with everyone.
Then there was the car. Hooooooooly smokes. One of the craziest things on four wheels you will ever lay eyes, and if you are reaaaaaally lucky hands, on. A bit over 1300kg, around 600 horsepower and 800nm of tourque, all paired up with all wheel drive and a sequential gearbox. The car can be reconfigured as needed and produce more or less horsepower and even vary in weight. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in just under two seconds (TWOOOOO) and 0-200 in just under four! One tank of fuel keeps the car normally running between 10-15 minutes and the engine gets redone about every 500km. If I remember correctly you could get one of these for about 500.000.-€ or 350.000.-€ used, but I am not 100 sure about the prices anymore. I can only hope to someday sit next to maybe Tanner for a little drive and feel what the two together are capable of. I still get goosebumps thinking about the sound of that beast. And to be totally honest my stomach might not even be able to cope with that kind of power…
Have a good and some special thanks to Ford Germany for this invitation.
